Our nursery is organic. By this we mean that every ingredient of every meal is organically sourced. We are committed to providing the children with only organic produce, sources where possible, from local farms, and suppliers who have been certified by the Soil Association. Fish is line caught or wild.
Our nursery and entire operation is inspected by the soil association on an annual basis.
Our menus change weekly and seasonally and include a wide variety of foods to ensure a balance of nutrients and a range of textures and colours to make the children’s mealtimes interesting and enjoyable.
In addition, our menus are approved by the British Nutritional Society. This means that you can rest assured that your child is getting a healthy and balanced diet – additive free with NO genetically modified ingredients.
Meals are freshly prepared in house by our own chef. We do not buy in any premade or over processed foods. We even make our own ice cream and biscuits!
Mealtimes are the ideal opportunity to promote children’s social development, while enjoying food and highlighting the importance of making healthy choices.
Children eat their meals with the staff in their playrooms and are viewed as a time fun & joy! Meals are at the same time each day. This routine does not change and the children feel secure in this knowledge. Children learn about the importance of food, are encouraged to eat independently and to try new foods.
They learn about recycling and to care for their environment.
At snack times the children are encouraged to make their choice from the café self service style. This helps them to become confident in making their own choices and selections.
But….What Does Organic really Mean?
We are passionate about our food and our proud to be the first certified Organic Children’s Nursery in the United Kingdom.
‘ORGANIC’ means:
1. SAFE SCRUTINISED FOOD
2. Genetically Modified Ingredients are not allowed
3. Artificial chemicals, pesticides, fertilisers and soil treatments which can pollute the soil, water and crops are not allowed
4. NO Artificial additives, preservatives, flavourings, colourings, sweeteners or enhancers
5. Animal welfare is strictly protected
6. Animal feed is strictly controlled (thereby restricting the chemicals that are able to pass to humans through the food chain)
7. NO chemicals and drugs are included in animal feed such as growth hormones and antibiotics
8. Organic food tastes better! (ok that is our opinion, but try an organic egg and see if you can’t taste the difference)
Being registered and licensed as Organic by the Soil Association (S A Certification) the UK’s largest and arguably most stringent organic certification body is a very important status with many responsibilities. This means menus, ingredients lists, cleaning materials, preparation and hygiene schedules are rigorously checked by the Soil Association to make sure that we are doing exactly what we have promised. First Learning goes above and beyond the Soil Association’s requirements and everything we use is Organic or ‘wild or line caught’ in the case of some fish. We will never substitute a non-organic ingredient for an organic one.
